I love a city bride and I love an opinionated bride! Jessica McColgan has both going on. Growing up a few miles outside of the city, she got married at Boston Harbor Hotel over Labor Day weekend. This was a dream choice, not just for its proximity to her hometown, but also because it gave her a free pair of Jimmy Choos (!) and let her adorable golden retriever, Bear, play a role in the party. So. So. Genius! Read on for her bridal style and super smart insider tips.
Bridal Style Classic with modern touches. I wanted a traditional wedding that didn’t feel dated or stuffy. We incorporated a few modern updates to some of the classic wedding staples: a two piece wedding dress, blue tuxedos, and a white dance floor to name a few.
Dress By Romona Keveza from Musette Bridal; I was torn between a formal ball gown and a form fitted dress. Once I started shopping I finally understood why some brides have two dresses. I was conflicted about my dress style until I found the best of both worlds. My Romona Keveza dress was two separate pieces and made up of an off the shoulder form fitted lace dress and a detachable tulle skirt. I was able to have the dramatic ball gown for church and pictures and then remove the tulle for dancing and fun.
Shoes by Boston Harbor Hotel has an unbelievable campaign called “Say #IDOINCHOO” for their Friday and Sunday brides. Lucky for me, I was a Sunday of Labor Day bride so I was treated to an exclusive consultation at the Jimmy Choo Boutique in Copley and was able to pick out my complimentary pair of Jimmy Choo shoes. It was such an added bonus and a fun experience. So much goes into planning and picking out every detail so having a moment to focus on just shoes and get treated to them was exactly what every bride deserves. I was too nervous to break them in before the big day so I tracked down a second pair of Jimmy Choo peep toe flats to change into at the reception. The campaign created a loyal customer in me!
Accessories To cover the clasp of the removable skirt, I wore a belt also made by Romona Keveza from Musette Bridal. For jewelry, I wore a simple floating pearl necklace made up of pearls from a necklace my grandmother wore on her wedding day and a pearl bracelet by Kate Spade.
Health Secret Class Pass was the best thing I did for myself before the wedding. Instead of a regular gym membership I was able to visit the best gyms in the city and keep my routine diverse. Going to a different class each morning kept me interested and the last minute cancelation charge kept me invested. My favorites include classes at Exhale, Bar Method, Turnstyle, and Recycle. I feel like I owe class pass and my gym buddy who went with me a huge thank you!
Beauty Secret Skyn Iceland products are my favorite. I gave their Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels to all my bridesmaids in the morning while getting ready in the suite.
Hair by Orlanda from Olanda’s International Day Spa. Finding a hair stylist to come to you can be difficult. I am very lucky Orlanda is a longtime family friend and would have traveled anywhere for me!
Makeup By Best of Boston winner Tavi De La Rosa did our makeup and I am absolutely obsessed with him. Having him in the suite with us was like having another best friend around. He is a wizard when it comes to lashes.
Greatest moment of the night We have a golden retriever who is the first real love of my life. The Boston Harbor Hotel is an extremely dog friendly hotel which allowed Bear to be a big part of our day. Bear stayed with me the night before in the suite, sat with my Dad on the balcony as I got ready and was part of some of our favorite wedding pictures. One of the greatest moments of the night was getting announced into the ballroom as Mr. & Mrs. with Bear. As soon as the doors opened Bear came bouncing into the room with us looked around and then BOLTED the other way. The moment was caught on video and I can’t stop laughing when I watch it. Turns out dogs can get cold paws.
Wedding Venue The Wharf Room at The Boston Harbor Hotel. I would absolutely recommend The Boston Harbor Hotel to other brides. To have a city wedding that is also on the water was our goal. We had an idea of what we wanted in a venue for our wedding day and our expectations were truly exceeded. The hotel has the motto “Beyond Compare” and it couldn’t be more accurate. The Boston Harbor Hotel is an extremely unique place and I am thrilled we were able to host our wedding there.
Advice for brides to be You will receive a ton of great advice and it is all helpful/true. The day does go by so fast, you do need to remember to eat, and don’t forget to have fun, but the best advice in my opinion is to take your dream honeymoon…don’t put it off and don’t think it is too expensive. You deserve it!
